Values & Definitions
What the numbers mean and how to interpret them
How do the values in MMR compare with traditional guidebooks?
How do the values in MMR compare with traditional guidebooks?
It’s not uncommon to find differences between MMR values and guidebooks. MMR prices are based exclusively on millions of actual sales that are updated daily. The statistical programs that compute the averages are completely neutral, using universally accepted statistical techniques without editorial opinion or bias. MMR programs do not use interpolation to compensate for insufficient data. Guidebooks, which do not have access to the same amount of data as the MMR, use editorial expertise and limited market observations to arrive at prices.
Why is the mileage different for each vehicle?
Why is the mileage different for each vehicle?
The MMR makes old-fashioned mileage tables, that do not allow for differences in how a vehicle is used, obsolete. The MMR statistical programs compute a separate average mileage and per-mile depreciation factor for every vehicle in its database.
How is the vehicle's condition determined?
How is the vehicle's condition determined?
Although vehicle condition is subjective and the MMR is objective, we recognize that condition is a crucial factor for many of our subscribers.
To address this, the MMR program not only simulates condition by showing values and mileage estimates above and below the average, but also incorporates the AutoGrade condition score, as well as an Electric Vehicle Battery Health (EVBH) score for qualifying electric vehicles when available. This additional data helps provide a more comprehensive view of a vehicle’s value.
What does Projected Average mean?
What does Projected Average mean?
Projected or forecasted values are MMR predictions of prices for the next month. These projections are based on millions of auction transactions that are updated daily and the result of the MMR comprehensive forecasting program. The accuracy of the modeling technique is not a one-time assurance but a daily commitment, tested against the most current actual auction transactions and adjusted based on the best available statistical model, ensuring the reliability of our predictions.
What is Estimated Retail?
What is Estimated Retail?
The MMR provides an estimated average range of retail values based on Cox Automotive retail transactions for specific year, make, model, and style. These retail prices, shown for subscriber convenience, are estimated mark-ups over wholesale values. It’s important to note that since Manheim does not collect retail value data, users are strongly advised to consult additional retail information sources to obtain more accurate retail price estimates.
What is the MMR Range?
What is the MMR Range?
The MMR Range is a confidence interval representing the probability that 70% of sales with similar attributes will fall within the range.
Why is there no MMR Range displayed sometimes?
Why is there no MMR Range displayed sometimes?
In some cases, the MMR Range may not be displayed when there is not a sufficient number of transactions for a specific year, make, and model (YMM). As more transactions occur for that vehicle type, the range will narrow based on the adjusted factors, increasing the reliability and specificity of the MMR and providing a more precise and confident valuation.
What does the "Small Sample Size" icon mean?
What does the "Small Sample Size" icon mean?
The “Small Sample Size” icon appears when there are not enough transactions to calculate a reliable MMR for a specific year, make, model, and trim (YMMT). For the user’s convenience, the MMR is estimated using the original MSRP and depreciation trends from similar vehicles. This ensures you still receive useful value estimates even when actual transaction data is limited.
What is an EV Battery Health Score?
What is an EV Battery Health Score?
An EV Battery Health Score displays the VIN-specific remaining battery capacity on a scale of 0–100.
Calculations & Methodology
How MMR computes and updates its values
How are the MMR averages calculated?
How are the MMR averages calculated?
The Base MMR is the average wholesale price, odometer, condition grade and build quality of recent transactions for a given year, excluding outliers. Recent transactions are more heavily weighted to ensure the base MMR reflects seasonal trends and market dynamics.
New calculations are meticulously performed every night to include the most recent sales transactions in the MMR database. The statistical engines rigorously analyze every transaction, ensuring that all the MMR values, historical averages, depreciation factors, regional and seasonal adjustments, and price forecasting, are based on the most up-to-date and accurate information available.
The statistical engines of the MMR are highly adaptable, prioritizing data integrity and availability. The MMR doesn’t make assumptions when it lacks the necessary data. For instance, the MMR refrains from providing estimates for mileage depreciation and price forecasts if there’s not a sufficient number of recent and statistically reliable transactions. However, as soon as reliable data becomes available, the MMR promptly applies the best statistical methods to estimate MMR values, ensuring its responsiveness and reliability.
How are the MMR adjustments calculated?
How are the MMR adjustments calculated?
MMR Adjustments play a crucial role in providing a detailed breakdown of how specific factors such as odometer, geographic region, condition, and exterior color impact a vehicle’s value relative to its base MMR. These adjustments are derived from comprehensive statistical algorithms and models analyzing wholesale transaction prices, recalculated daily for each year, make, model, and style. The adjusted MMR is the sum of the base MMR plus adjustments and clearly depicts how it compares to the base and typical range, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the vehicle’s value.
Why does MMR pre-compute averages?
Why does MMR pre-compute averages?
Statistical solutions for calculating averages from small data sets, such as brand new models or seldom-traded vehicles, requires a lot of processing time and horsepower to arrive at accurate averages. This kind of heavy lifting is outside the capabilities of desktop PCs.
Why do I get a different result than MMR when I average the transactions?
Why do I get a different result than MMR when I average the transactions?
The differences in results occur because you are using a different dataset than the one utilized by the MMR statistical models.
MMR consists of two components. First, the prices and mileage displayed in the MMR are pre-calculated by the MMR statistical engines and stored separately from auction transactions in the back end. The user-facing side simply displays these values without actually calculating them. Second, the auction transactions shown on the Transactions and Auctions summary tabs represent a sample from the past 30 days, providing additional market insights. However, MMR statistical models base their calculations on all transactions for a specific vehicle, not just the recent ones listed in the summary tabs.
How does the MMR respond to market changes?
How does the MMR respond to market changes?
Using a robust statistical model that recalculates values daily based on a comprehensive analysis of wholesale transaction prices ensures that the MMR reflects the most current market trends and seasonal fluctuations. By weighting recent transactions more heavily, the MMR stays up-to-date with the actual market value of vehicles, providing a reliable and timely snapshot of wholesale vehicle prices.
How many transactions are required to calculate an MMR value?
How many transactions are required to calculate an MMR value?
To generate an MMR value, there must be at least 6 transactions in the past year, and at least 2 transactions in the past 90 days, for a specific trim level within a given Year-Make-Model (YMM). If these thresholds are not met, but there are sufficient transactions for related trims within the same YMM, an MMR value may be estimated and displayed with a “Small Sample Size” icon.
How often is the MMR updated?
How often is the MMR updated?
All pricing is completed nightly, Monday through Friday, ensuring the latest data is always available. The process begins Monday through Friday evenings at 10pm ET and finishes between 12:30am and 2:30am ET. It also runs on Sunday at 4am ET and typically finishes around 7:30am ET.
Transactions & Data Integrity
What's included, what's excluded, and why
Which transactions are considered invalid and excluded from MMR?
Which transactions are considered invalid and excluded from MMR?
The following transactions are considered invalid transactions:
- Total Resource Auction (TRA) – Salvage
- Mark III
- Specialty Vehicles
- Collision
- Distribution Center
- Heavy Truck
- Salvage Units that are not TRA
- Lemon Law and other title brands
In addition, any units with less than 50 miles or announced as Lemon Law or Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO) will be excluded from MMR.
Why does the number of transactions displayed in the Transactions table vary?
Why does the number of transactions displayed in the Transactions table vary?
The number of transactions shown in the transactions table can vary because it represents a sample of only recent auction data and reflects the most relevant recent wholesale activity for a specific Year-Make-Model-Trim. While the table typically highlights sales from roughly the past 30 days, the exact number of displayed transactions may differ based on various factors such as overall market activity, number of auctions held, volume of vehicles sold, or situations where certain recent sales are not shown (for example, when a vehicle is currently being resold).
The table is designed to provide a snapshot of recent transactions, offering insights into the wholesale market without including excessive data. In cases where there haven’t been many recent sales, older transactions may appear to help provide a more complete view of activity. In higher-volume situations, the table will display up to the first 100 transactions, starting with the most recent sales.
Why are some transactions marked with an asterisk and designated as "not in sample"?
Why are some transactions marked with an asterisk and designated as "not in sample"?
In addition to the set of “invalid transactions” that are disqualified from MMR pricing calculations, the MMR model applies a broader set of statistical and rule-based filters to ensure data integrity and valuation accuracy. Transactions denoted with an asterisk in the MMR interface represent statistical outliers that have been removed from the valuation sample to prevent skewed results. The outlier detection process considers a combination of factors including sale price, mileage, and condition. Vehicles with less than 50 miles and Previous Canadian sales are also excluded and identified with an asterisk.
Why are Previous Canadian transactions excluded from MMR pricing calculations?
Why are Previous Canadian transactions excluded from MMR pricing calculations?
As of February 2025, all “Previous Canadian” VINs were removed from the MMR sample and excluded from MMR pricing calculations.
The exclusion of Previous Canadian transactions from the MMR sample is designed to improve the accuracy and stability of MMR values, since Canadian transactions in US MMR valuations introduces volatility due to differences in market dynamics, vehicle condition standards, and pricing behavior.
By excluding these transactions, the MMR model aims to reduce valuation noise, enhance consistency across U.S. market data, and ensure MMR reflects true domestic market conditions.
This aligns with Manheim’s broader efforts to continually improve MMR valuations and reduce pricing fluctuations caused by sample mix changes.
Why are units with a Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO) excluded from MMR pricing calculations?
Why are units with a Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO) excluded from MMR pricing calculations?
Since MMR is solely a valuation tool for used vehicles, and Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO) vehicles are considered new, MSO vehicles are excluded from MMR calculations regardless of age or mileage.
